GP2 2011 Round 1 - Istanbul Turkey Preview

GP2 Series seventh season starts this weekend

The GP2 Series enters in its seventh season after six thriving years that established the category as a must-see for those wanting to know  who the next big thing in Formula One will be . The new GP2/11 car debuted last January in Abu Dhabi in the GP2 Asia Series and on Pirelli tyres – the Italian manufacturer becoming the sole supplier to the category. The 2011 season is set to deliver action-packed and exciting races that fans and motorsport professionals alike have come to expect from the most successful Formula One feeder series.
Two new teams join the field: Carlin and Team AirAsia, expanding the grid to twenty six cars. The latter chose to benefit from two experienced and race winner drivers in the shape of Luiz Razia and Davide Valsecchi, while the British squad bet on their strong and successful relationship with Mikhail Aleshin and sophomore Max Chilton. Over eighteen races this season, twenty-six drivers will fight for glory and if GP2 Asia Series Champion Romain Grosjean at Dams’ looks like a serious title contender, many other talented racers will also run for the same status.
From Istanbul to Monza, and alongside Formula One, the 2011 GP2 Series season promises one extremely competitive battle!
A word from Mario Isola from Pirelli
"At Istanbul, Pirelli will equip both GP2 and GP3 with its medium compound rubber because of the extremely versatile features of this tyre, as Pirelli’s Racing Manager Mario Isola explained: “The Istanbul Park circuit is quite a complicated track because of its medium abrasive surface and several challenging turns that put a lot of pressure on the tyres. Specifically, the front right tyre absorbs most of the stress that the track provides: especially in the well-known Turn Eight, which is a fast and sweeping corner with four apexes. We decided to equip both GP3 and GP2 drivers with our medium slicks because Istanbul is a very demanding circuit that has a stronger impact on the tyre structure than on the compound.”

GP3 Friday Free Practise Morning Time

The second GP3 Series season officially kicked off in Turkey today with an additional early first free practice session. The teams were greeted with wet and windy conditions at Istanbul Park, making for a challenging start for the thirty young drivers. As they got to grips with the tricky conditions, it was Marussia Manor Racing’s sophomore Rio Haryanto who led the way. The 18-year-old from Indonesia headed the pack followed by fellow GP3 returnees Dean Smith for Addax Team and Simon Trummer for MW Arden. Newcomers Lewis Williamson, Gabby Chaves, Bottas and Antonio Felix Da Costa were also quick to find their pace on Pirelli wet weather tyres.

As the second half of the session got underway, Bottas moved to the top of the time sheet pushing Haryanto into second spot. Waved yellow flags briefly interrupted proceedings when Atech CRS GP’s rookie Zoel Amberg stopped on track. With ten minutes left on the clock, Bottas stayed top ahead of a charging Smith, Haryanto, MW Arden’s Mitch Evans and RSC Mucke Motorsport’s Nigel Melker.

As the end of the session was in sight, Chaves grabbed the top spot for Addax only for Bottas to snatch it straight back; the Finn then remained unbeaten at the top ahead of Melker in second. The surprise of the session was Melker’s teammate rookie Luciano Bacheta – the 21-year-old British driver ended the session third on his Series debut. Chaves followed in fourth ahead of Evans, James Calado, Haryanto, Smith, Trummer and Caldarelli.

The GP3 Series will be back on track this afternoon at 17:20 (local time) for the second free practice session.

GP3 Istanbul Preview

The 2010 inaugural season exceeded all expectations. There was drama and excitement in abundance, with the championship battle going down to the wire. And as the second GP3 season kicks-off this weekend, it looks set to repeat this success.

With an even stronger driver line-up, the 2011 grid boasts a once again truly international field made up of drivers from sixteen different countries across five continents, and ranging from sixteen to twenty-three years of age. Eleven drivers are returning to the GP3 stage, alongside nineteen rookies. Those looking for action-packed racing will not be disappointed; with twelve single-seater champions and twenty-five race winners in the thirty-strong field, edge of the seat racing is all but guaranteed.

As a leading junior category it is enormously important that GP3 continually evolves, and as a result, this season the aero downforce has be reduced whilst the tyres have a higher peak of grip. The car will be even more selective and demanding for the young racers. There will also be increased track time, with an extra Friday practice session at each race weekend adding valuable mileage.

As GP3 begins its second season along-side the GP2 Series and Formula One, the scene is set for another spectacular year of racing.
