Even then, he nearly won in any case, as his mangled vehicle slid along the wall toward the finish line. But the impact of the crash caused him to slow enough for Wheldon to surge past in the final 200 yards.

F1 Grand Prix de Monaco Race Monte Carlo Live Today 29 May 2011

After difficult, halted qualifying yesterday, we we do believe about something that we always need. Luck has always played a big part in winning in the gambler’s paradise that is Monte Carlo. And on Saturday it was very much on Sebastian Vettel’s side, as the Red Bull driver emerged triumphant in a qualifying session that was rendered something of a lottery by Sergio Perez’s dramatic accident in the Sauber (from which the Mexican mercifully escaped without serious injury). With a grid that may well not represent their true Monaco form, we take a look at driver's fortune. The prediction of the Monaco Grand Prix will be 'different' tomorrow and hopefully every driver should be able to push for the win, even though the legendary street circuit's barrier won't let that makes so easy. So let's hope not to get any more car wrecked today.

The Team's Fatcs

Red Bull
Sebastian Vettel, 1m 13.556s, P2
Mark Webber, 1m 14.019s, P3

Zero problems for Vettel, who beat Raikkonen’s long-standing pole record of 1m 13.664s from 2005 and was in just the right place at the right time to take the most coveted grid place. Webber was still suffering from the loss of FP1 track time, but said he was happy with third in the circumstances.

McLaren
Jenson Button, 1m 13.997s, P2
Lewis Hamilton, 1m 15.280s, P7, starts P9

Button said his MP4-26 wasn’t quite au point in Q2, but he really nailed it early on in Q3 and that paid dividends as he described himself as very happy with the car’s performance and his lap. Hamilton gambled on a late run in the hope of avoiding traffic but that backfired spectacularly as Perez’s accident forced him to abort at the crucial moment. He’d dominated Q1 and Q2, but found himself only seventh as his super-soft Pirellis had lost their temperature when Q3 resumed for a final two and a half minutes. Things went from bad to worse when stewards deleted his best Q3 time for missing the chicane, dropping him to ninth on the grid.

Ferrari
Fernando Alonso, 1m 14.483s, P4
Felipe Massa, 1m 14.877s, P6

Somewhere along the way Ferrari lost the pace they’d shown all weekend. Alonso said he didn’t get anything like the same feel from the car in qualifying that he did in practice, and it showed in the lap time. Massa said his session left him with a mixture of satisfaction and regret, after he made a mistake at Rascasse in Q3 which possibly cost him two places.

Mercedes
Michael Schumacher, 1m 14.682s, P5
Nico Rosberg, 1m 15.766s, P8, starts P7

Schumacher was the first to admit that Perez’s accident probably helped him to P5, and that P7 would have been more realistic. But he had his Mercedes going well. So did Rosberg, who bounced back superbly from his heavy morning mistake and accident to take P5 in Q1. Unfortunately, he, like Hamilton, was compromised by Perez’s incident, and should have been much higher than eighth.

Williams
Pastor Maldonado, 1m 16.528s, P9, starts P8
Rubens Barrichello, 1m 15.826s, P12

Maldonado took ninth on the grid for Williams for the second race in succession. He was fast and consistent, but was one of those compromised by the Perez incident. Barrichello said his car worked less well on new tyres than old, and blamed traffic for failing to get to Q3.

Sauber
Sergio Perez, No time, P10, will not start
Kamui Kobayashi, 1m 15.973s, P13

Perez did a great job to get his C30 into Q3 after setting ninth best time in Q2, but then he dropped it under braking for the chicane and ended up having a sizeable broadside impact with the chicane wall. Thankfully he was extricated conscious and speaking from the wreckage, but will not be allowed to start the race. Kobayashi got tagged by Alguersuari at Rascasse in Q1, and never quite got going in Q2.

Renault
Vitaly Petrov, 1m 15.815s, P11
Nick Heidfeld, 1m 16.214s, 16

Renault struggled all weekend on the super-soft tyre, and Petrov was not happy to miss out on the top 10. Heidfeld was only 16th, and said there were no problems. That summarised how much trouble the team were in.

Force India
Paul di Resta, 1m 16.118s, P14
Adrian Sutil, 1m 16.121s, P15

Di Resta and Sutil could not have been more closely matched, but for the fifth time the Scot out-qualified the German. The former thought P14 was a fair reflection of the VJM04’s pace, while the latter said that Petrov spoiled one of his laps and that thereafter his tyres were past their best.

Toro Rosso
Sebastien Buemi, 1m 16.300s, P17
Jaime Alguersuari, 1m 17.820s, P20

Buemi was very disappointed in Toro Rosso’s qualifying form, while Alguersuari missed out on the chance to get through to Q2 as his STR6 was in the its nose being repaired after he tagged the back of Kobayashi’s Sauber at Rascasse.

Lotus
Heikki Kovalainen, 1m 17.343s, P18
Jarno Trulli, 1m 17.381s, P19

Lotus came back to earth in Monaco, after their Q2 performance in Spain. Kovalainen said he didn’t get the best from his first set of tyres in Q1, but that his second run was much better. Trulli reported that his first set of tyres was fantastic, but that the car did not respond anything like so well on the second. Head scratching all round.

Virgin
Timo Glock, 1m 17.914s, P21
Jerome D'Ambrosio, 1m 18.736s, P22

Glock said he had pretty much a perfect Saturday, and that he got the best qualifying lap he’d ever driven at Monaco which included a couple of brushed walls. D’Ambrosio got a bit left behind this time, and said he felt he went backwards compared to FP3.

HRT
Tonio Liuzzi, No time, will start P23
Narain Karthikeyan, No time, will start P24

Liuzzi’s car was still not repaired after his crash in FP3, and Karthikeyan’s did not run after sustaining a suspension problem, but the stewards announced that they will be allowed to race after setting suitable times in a free practice session

New England Revolution vs LA Galaxy MLS Live 28 May 2011

From previous match, The Galaxy and New England split points in a 1-1 draw in the Galaxy's home opener.

Marko Perovic, Ousmane Dabo, Kenny Mansally and Kheli Dube are out for the Revolution were injured. Leonardo and Sean Alvarado are out for the Galaxy and Adam Cristman is questionable.

Chad Barrett has three goals and Juan Pablo Angel has produced two for the Galaxy. Joseph leads the Revolution with four goals and two of those were penalties

WSBK U.S. Miller Superpole Qualifying Live 28 May 2011

Carlos checa, no duobt will be up front again here at Miller. He topping the time sheet at FP1 as everybody expected.World Superbike Championship leader Carlos Checa sent out a warning signal to his rivals during first FP1 as he topped the session by six tenths of a second, despite missing a large portion of it.

An eventful session for the Spaniard, who was denied a double win around the American venue last season by technical issues, Checa was hit by another mechanical problem during the opening ten minutes of the session, but was soon back out and lapping quickly on the Althea Ducati.
Surging to the top of the timesheets with 25 minutes remaining, Checa's session swiftly came to an end when he came off the 1098R, possibly caused by another technical issue.
Even so, his time of 1min 48.914secs was still well clear of Leon Camier in second position, the Briton getting an uncustomary good start to a weekend by out-pacing his Aprilia team-mate Max Biaggi in third place.
Jakub Smrz moved up to fourth place late on aboard the Effenbert Liberty Ducati, while the following Michel Fabrizio, Jonathan Rea, Troy Corser, Tom Sykes and Eugene Laverty ensured all seven manufacturers were represented inside the top ten.
Elsewhere, Leon Haslam could only manage 14th best on the factory BMW, two spots behind Ayrton Badovini on the satellite Italia S1000RR. Badovini's team-mate, the returning James Toseland, was 19th quickest.

Bacelona Win The Final Champions League 2011

Barcelona is too good, this team is. Too good. Barca looking very comfortable, as you do, with a 3-1 lead
Barcelona is the champions of Europe after producing a scintillating performance to defeat Manchester United 3-1 at Wembley Stadium this evening.

In what proved to be a one sided affair, Pedro gave the Catalan giants the advantage only for Wayne Rooney to cancel out his strike. In the second half, however, Lionel Messi and David Villa took center stage, adding their names to the scoresheet in an imperious win.

The first half commenced at a frenetic pace, with Manchester United enjoying the best of the early exchanges. However, Barca eventually found its rhythm, and the match settled into a pattern of the Spanish side enjoying possession while United attempted to keep it at bay.

David Villa enjoyed a pair of efforts, one of which whizzed past the upright, and the other was gathered by Edwin van der Sar. With such dominance being exhibited by Barca, a breakthrough was inevitable, and Pedro duly delivered on 27 minutes.

Xavi was allowed to stroll through the center of the pitch and reach the penalty area, where he flicked a pass into the path of the winger, who coolly slotted inside Van der Sar's near post for a thoroughly deserved advantage.

But against the run of play, United hit back, albeit in controversial fashion. Interplay between Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney led to the ball reaching Ryan Giggs, who appeared to be in an offside position before feeding Rooney in space in the area. The England international kept his head to curl the ball across Victor Valdes and into the corner.

Messi magic | The Argentine slammed home the second goal

At the end of what was a breathless 45 minutes, Barca looked to regain the advantage. Lionel Messi continued to drift deep and collect the ball, and  came within inches of reaching Villa's near post cutback, but was unable to make definitive connection.

The second half witnessed a continuous flow of traffic towards the United goal. Dani Alves stung the legs of Van der Sar from inside the box before Messi's followup was cleared from under the crossbar. But the diminutive front-man was not to be denied.

On 54 minutes, a static United rearguard allowed him time and space to approach the area and rifle a shot that swerved past a cumbersome dive from Van der Sar and into the net, for his 12th goal in the Champions League this season, equaling Ruud van Nistelrooy's record total in the competition.

Barca maintained the momentum. Messi, Xavi and Iniesta all tested Van der Sar but the keeper stood up to their efforts. Still, the third seemed destined to arrive, and with 20 minutes remaining, United's fate was sealed.

Sergio Busquets rolled the ball to Villa on the edge of the area, and the Spaniard swerved his strike superbly into the top corner, before running to the fans behind the goal to celebrate.

From then on, Barca was content to see out the victory, to clinch the famous trophy for the fourth time in its history, and its second title in three seasons.

Full Result Analysis Barcelona vs Manchester United Champions League Final 2011

The teams are back on the field and Barcelona are set to kick off. Barca's best chance of the second comes to Dani Alves who streaks down the right and is played in. He takes a strong shot that Van der Sar pushes wide. Messi latches on the rebound and tries to float in but is deflected away. Second goal for barca come after Messi has two steps of space an thunders a shot home to Van der Sar's near side. All too easy for the Argentine superstar. The Dutchman had no chance at stopping that one.2-1 for Barca.

That will do it, people. Right after the substitution, Villa gets a touch on the ball at the top of the box and curls it wonderfully around Van der Sar into the top corner. Too good, this team is. Too good. Barca looking very comfortable, as you do, with a 3-1 lead. The Red Devils haven't given up yet. Giggs launches a ball into Hernandez at the corner of the box. Valdes comes and punches clear.Barca Win the champions league 2011.

The Analysis :
1:37 p.m. Today’s Lineups
The only surprise in the lineups named by the two coaches is the absence of Carles Puyol, who has struggled with injuries. Javier Mascherano will start alongside Gerard Pique.
Manchester United: Edwin van der Sar; Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Fabio da Silva; Park Ji-Sung, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia; Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez.
Barcelona: Victor Valdes; Javier Mascherano, Gerard Pique, Eric Abidal, Dani Alves; Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta, Xavi; Lionel Messi, Pedro, David Villa.
The referee is Viktor Kassai of Hungary. He should be quite familiar with the Barcelona players, having worked Spain’s World Cup semifinal against Germany last summer (as well as the U.S.-Ghana game that sent the Americans home) and its Euro 2012 qualifier against the Czech Republic in March.

2:12 P.M. No Berbatov Today
Those who predicted a late winner by Dimitar Berbatov won’t get it: he’s not even among Manchester United’s subs:
Kuszczak, Owen, Anderson, Smalling, Nani, Scholes, Fletcher
So 20 goals in the Premier League apparently aren’t what they used to be. Maybe Alex Ferguson just didn’t want him around; Berbatov has already lost two finals — with Bayer Leverkusen in 2002 and with United in 2009.
Barcelona’s subs:
Oier, Puyol, Keita, Adriano, Thiago, Afellay, Bojan.

Lionel Messi and David Villa scored second-half goals as Barcelona overpowered Manchester United, 3-1, on Saturday to win the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley Stadium in London.
2:46 P.M. We’re Under Way
The first test is a floating cross from the left by Rooney. Valdes handles it coolly and cleanly. Barcelona pushes right back, giving Van der Sar his first touch of the ball, too.

8th Minute United Is Pushing Hard
A dangerous long ball leading Rooney is cut off by a charging Valdes, who punches it away with a dive at the top of the penalty area. He came a long way, and had to.
United looks fast, everywhere. Valencia will turn the corner on Abidal at some point; bet on it. And Chicharito wants a goal so bad you can see it. He’s challenging every ball he can reach, and testing the offside trap.
If United can get a goal, they won’t have to keep up that pace. But the one thing they most definitely do not want to do is give one up, because chasing Barcelona is no way to go.

12th Minute Barcelona Trying to Calm Things Down
United’s pressure has had the added bonus of unsettling Barcelona both in the midfield and at the back. Valdes kicking a nervous clearance right out of bounds. Trouble stringing passes together.
There’s just no room for them to work. Their reaction now seems to be to get the ball wide and create some room.

Barcelona's Gerard Pique, right, tried to block Manchester United's Javier Hernandez.

19th Minute The Early Storm Is Over
Barça appears to have gotten out its jitters. The passes are flowing now; Pedro just missed a side-footed shot from six yards; and David Villa had a rocket of a shot from the top of the box deflected wide.
Now it’s United that is in trouble. Its offense now seems to consist of winning the ball off a deflection and whaling it long for Hernandez or Rooney as quickly as possible.
21st Minute Villa Again
Villa frees himself inside the top of the 18 this time, but his right-footed shot is stabbed by a diving Van der Sar.

27th Minute GOAL — Barcelona 1-0!
Barcelona's Pedro scored the first goal of the game.
Xavi draws the defense to him effortlessly, slips the ball to Pedro and he slots it easily past Van der Sar.
Just like that, Barcelona’s in control and United is in deep trouble.

34th Minute GOOAALL! And Rooney Gets It Right Back!!! 1-1!!
Rooney's goal tied the score at 1-1.
An innocuous ball won in midfield is flicked to Rooney, who dribbles, pings it back and forth with Giggs and then fires into the top left corner.
 1-1.
And the United fans have been awakened. United not touching the ball much, but Rooney’s charge made the most of it. A shift in momentum, as the Barca fans are mustering their enthusiasm again, realizing this may not be as easy as it seemed just minutes ago.

42nd Minute Two Near Misses
Barcelona nearly scores on a free kick, and then Messi is a step slow to a return pass in the goalmouth after another burst up the middle.
He really should have scored there, but the free kick would have been a prettier play: Xavi rolled the ball to his right to the top of the box, where it was redirected on a 45 to a slashing Busquets (?). But the second pass was a bit too far in front.
Too bad; would’ve been a training film for eternity.

Halftime It’s 1-1
An uneven even first half, if you know what I mean. United came out fast, put some pressure on and then couldn’t sustain. Barcelona took control, got a deserved goal, and then gave it right back on a soft one in which they allowed Rooney to dribble right in from the sideline, run a give-and-go with Giggs and fire into the top corner.
50th Minute Danger Compounded
Iniesta springs Dani Alves in the back door on the right, but Van der Sar blocks his low shot — right out to Messi. His shot never makes it through.
54th Minute Messi SCORES!!! Barcelona 2-1
Three quick touches, no one closes him down and he just pushes the ball out for a left-footed shot that curls around Van der Sar.
That’s 53 goals for him this season. Wow.
55th Minute Every Time Messi Does It, You’re Surprised
It’s never a surprise when Messi scores, but the way he can just make something out of nothing in a few quick steps is what makes him so fantastically good. Everyone knows what he can do, but when the defense doesn’t react immediately — every time — he sees it as a chance.
He’s so light on his feet, so quick into space, that sometimes it’s over before you can do anything about it. Just deadly. In many ways, there’s no one like him.
60th Minute Yellow card for Dani Alves
He slid into Evra from the side/behind as he broke into the middle. There have been worse tackles today, but Alves gets booked for this one.
First card of the game, which has been remarkably lacking in both fouls and overdramatic complaints about them.
61st Minute Yellow to Carrick
That’s two in two minutes. He definitely earned his, bashing down Iniesta.
63rd Minute The Stats Don’t Lie
Barcelona leads in shots (13-2) and possession time (67 percent). Yeah, I know. You’re all shocked.
67th Minute Teeing Off on Van der Sar
First Xavi, the Iniesta drill 18-yard shots at Van der Sar. It’s all Barcelona now.
Fabio just went off for a minute to stretch; he may be showing the strain that all the United defenders must be feeling right now. Another goal soon — and you just feel it’s coming — and you have to think this one’ll be over.

69th Minute Villa Scores!!! Barca 3-1!
David Villa's goal gave Barcelona a 3-1 lead.
Villa scores it, but again it’s mostly Messi.
And that should seal it. Ferguson slinks back in his seat.
Crowd breakdown: About 1/3 Barca, 1/3 Man United, 1/3 seem neutral. In terms of spirit? Barca, 97 percent.
70th Minute Masters at Work
Messi, once again, takes the ball on a string, carrying it into the box like he’s walking a dog. When he finally loses it, it pings off legs and is pseudo-cleared right back to Barcelona. When Villa corrals it at the top of the circle, he looks up and curls a beautiful — unsavable — shot over the outstretched left hand of Van der Sar.
After the last 20 minutes, retirement probably never looked so good to him.
77th Minute Scholes in for Carrick
Probably could have gone in for Giggs or Park, but no one’s seen either of them for half an hour.
79th Minute Yellow Card for Valencia
Let’s be honest, it’s about time.
He shoulders down Messi at midfield as Giggs — hey, look! Ryan Giggs is still in the game! — cries in vain for a handball in the box on a backtracking Villa.
85th Minute Yellow Card for Valdes
For time wasting. But can you blame him for taking a few moments to savor this?
88th Minute Puyol and Keita On; Villa and Alves Off
Dani Alves follows David Villa (for Keita) off for the final moments. Alves’s exit will allow Barcelona’s captain, Carles Puyol, to be on the field for the final whistle.

90th Minute Afellay on for Pedro
Just waiting for the whistle, or one last bit of Messi magic.

FINAL Barcelona 3, Manchester United 1
The champions of Spain are the champions of Europe.
Ferguson greets Guardiola, who won here as a player 19 years ago, with a smile on his face. He can have no complaints. The better team won today.

Messi’s goal in the 54th minute — three quick touches and a left-footed shot driven into the right corner — was his 53rd in 55 games for Barcelona this season. About 15 minutes later he dribbled down the right wing, teasing two defenders with his deft touches in close quarters, to create an opportunity for Villa. Villa’s shot, from about 20 yards, curled gently over the outstretched arms of United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
The United end of the stadium sagged, while the Barcelona supporters began a celebration that lasted long after the final whistle.
The teams had traded goals in the first half, with Pedro putting Barcelona ahead in the 27th minute after it overcame some early jitters and some heavy United pressure. But Wayne Rooney tied the game seven minutes later, driving in from the right sideline, executing a quick give-and-go with Ryan Giggs at the top of the penalty area and firing into the top left corner.
For a moment, United seemed to have grabbed a lifeline. But Barcelona soon regained control of the ball and the pace of the game. It dominated possession for long stretches, as it often does, and was soon back on the attack. When Messi and Villa scored, it had a two-goal lead that was essentially insurmountable.
The result ended the debate about which team was the best in Europe, and renewed the one about whether the current Barcelona squad is the best club team ever.
The title was Barcelona’s third in six years and its fourth over all in the competition, tying it with Ajax and Bayern Munich. Only Liverpool (five), A.C. Milan (seven) and Real Madrid (nine) have more. It also beat United in the 2009.

Barcelona vs Manchester United Half Time Result Analysis Champions League Final 28 May 2011

First Goal by Pedro Out of seemingly nothing, Xavi slips it to Pedro on the right, who has somehow found himself in space. He then sends Van der Sar the wrong way and it's 1-0 Barca. Soft goal for United to give away. Should have been tighter as it had the advantage in numbers.

Rooney makes something out of nothing. A quick throw from Barca is turned over. Rooney cuts in, passes to Giggs, gets it right back and blasts home to make it 1-1.before the break. No one really expected that one, especially Sir Alex, who looked pretty surprised on the sidelines. Questions of offsides against Giggs. Best chance of the second half that wasn't a goal. Messi breaks...slides to Villa on the right who slides it right back to Messi who can't get a toe on it and it keeps rolling out for a goal kick.

Half Time Result : 1-1
